August 1988 historical calendar: "Sackrider-Cook Residence, 740 West King Street--This charming symetrical Colonial-style home was built for Charles Sackrider, DDS, after World War I when there were only three or four houses on West King Street. (Dr. Sackrider's wife was Vera Haskell whose childhood home was featured on the 1981 historical calendar.) In 1935 the Sackrider house was bought by Mr. & Mrs. Donald O. Cook who kept up beautifully the house and its extensive grounds. Mr. Cook was a partner in the Wolverine Sign Works located where the Union Mattress Copany used to be at the west end of Bradley Street. In 1969 the Cooks built a one-story home on Riverside Drive and sold the house to Memorial Hospital The hospital has continued to use it for various offices and storage space." |
