G. Tannehill, baker, and A. L. Scott, physician (upstairs) May 1986 historical Calendar: "Shattuck Building, 2047-209 North Washington Street--This very substantial three-story stone building was built about 1891 by Charles Shattuck to make room for his rapidly expanding business. After an unbelievable number of careers in Owosso, Mr. Shattuck had found two items that everyone wanted: sewing machines and organs/pianos The new building was the home of the Michigan Sewing Machine and Organ Company. The Detroit newspapers at the time pointed out that this double-fronted commercial building done in Romanesque style was the finest front of any business house between Detroit and Grand Rapids. By the early 1920's, Owosso had its own radio station broadcasting from the third floorof the Shattuck Building. WSMH (for Wireless Shattuck Music House) broadcast Wednesday and Saturday Evenings." |
